Living in Your Listing? Here’s What You Need to Know
What’s the key to living in your home while it’s up for sale? Follow these three tips.
Selling a home is no simple task. It takes plenty of preparation, effort, and patience to pull off a successful sale, even with a professional agent by your side—and this is especially true for people who continue to live in their listing while it’s on the market.
So, if you happen to find yourself in this situation, what should you do? What does it take to balance your everyday life with your responsibilities as a home seller?
Once you put your for-sale sign up in the yard, there are a few tips and tricks you should follow to make living in your listing a more tolerable experience:
1. Start packing now. Not only will putting away items you’re not currently using help your home look cleaner and less cluttered, but getting a start on the packing process will also make your transition much easier when you eventually do find a buyer. If you aren’t going to need or use a certain item before you move, then it’s time to toss it, donate it, or pack it away.

2. Get squeaky clean. Aim for the same sparkle and shine as you’d expect in a five-star hotel. This means scrubbing, dusting, and polishing every nook and cranny.
3. Maintain your privacy and safety. With strangers coming through your home for showings, the last thing you want is to leave your valuables out in the open for all to see. If precious belongings aren’t already packed away, you must at very least make sure they’re locked up and out of sight.
